The Juma Mosque of Shamakhi is one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus, standing at the heart of a town that was once the medieval capital of Shirvan. Rebuilt more than once after earthquakes, the mosque remains an active place of worship and one of the most rewarding stops on the road between Baku and Gabala or Sheki.
History & architecture
Local tradition and several historical accounts trace the mosque's foundation to the 8th century, making it one of the earliest mosques built in the region after the Arab conquest of the Caucasus. Shamakhi itself served for centuries as the capital of the Shirvanshahs before the seat of power moved to Baku in the 12th century, and the mosque grew alongside the city as a major centre of trade and learning on the Silk Road.
Shamakhi sits in an active seismic zone, and the mosque has been damaged and rebuilt several times over the centuries, most extensively after major 19th-century earthquakes and again during a careful restoration completed in the 2010s. The current structure combines a domed prayer hall with slender minarets, reflecting both its ancient foundations and its more recent reconstruction.

A short drive from the mosque, the 15th-century Diri Baba Mausoleum is carved directly into a rock face in the village of Maraza and is considered one of the most unusual pieces of medieval Islamic architecture in Azerbaijan. Shamakhi's old cemetery and its 19th-century Yeddi Gumbaz ("Seven Domes") mausoleum complex are also worth a stop if time allows.
