Yanardag, known translated as the "Burning Mountain," is a remarkable natural gas fire that blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula near Baku. Unlike mud volcanoes or artificial geysers, Yanardag features a steady wall of flames dancing across the porous sandstone layers, completely unbothered by rain, snow, or heavy winds.
The Science and Origins Behind the Flames
This incredible geographical anomaly is fueled by deep-seated natural gas reserves escaping to the earth's surface through fractures in the earth's crust. When the hydrocarbons react with atmospheric oxygen, they ignite automatically. This constant natural combustion is precisely why Azerbaijan earned its legendary title as the "Land of Fire". Historically, many such fires burned across Absheron, but industrial drilling depleted the pressure, leaving Yanardag as one of the few surviving authentic wonders.
Historical Legends and Marco Polo
The mystical fires of Baku have deep-rooted connections to ancient religions, serving as a pillar of inspiration for early Zoroastrian fire-worshipers. Ancient explorers, including the famous Venetian merchant Marco Polo during his trans-continental journeys, documented these strange burning fountains of oil and gas. Later, French novelist Alexandre Dumas observed similar fires near the historic Ateshgah Fire Temple, highlighting the profound spiritual and cultural impact of these phenomena on global history.
